Structure and Function

The lowest part of the human body which plays an important role in support, weight distribution and locomotion is the foot. It is composed of the tarsal bones, the metatarsals and the phalanges. In relation to the ankle joint, it exhibits the following movements:

  • Dorsiflexion : Upward movement towards the leg
  • Plantar Flexion : Downward movement away from the leg
  • Inversion : Angular movement towards mid line of the body
  • Eversion : Angular movement away from mid line of the body
  • Abduction : Lateral movement away from mid line of the body
  • Adduction : Lateral movement towards mid line of the body
